My iPad Sport Relief auction - bonus items for winner, and some background

I'm auctioning my White 64GB 3G iPad 2 in aid of the BBC's Sport Relief charity. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160791254222

I did the same last year with an iPad and raised over £600, so I've set myself a target of a similar amount this year. But with the auction finishing midday on Sunday, the bids seem to be marooned at £440.  So, I'm throwing in a couple of bonus items for the winner - a second smartcover, and the useful camera connector kit.

If the auction fails to make £600, I will make up the difference to Sport Relief. But if some incredibly generous person bids more than the target, I will match the surplus. So, if it makes £650, I will donate £50 to Sport Relief.

Just for background, this is something I do from time to time with a range of devices provided by technology companies for review. When I've used them for a while I can either return them (sometimes surprisingly difficult), pay a sum to keep them, or auction them with the proceeds going to charity.

So what's on offer? Well mostly the items are test units supplied to the BBC - so there's a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, which has starred in a number of TV programmes including Newsnight, and there is the Sonos Play 3 wireless speaker, which streams music from your computer.

There are also some items kindly provided by companies especially for the auction, including three of the latest MiFi mobile broadband devices supplied by Three, three waterproof cases for gadgets supplied by the British firm Aquapac, plus the latest Nokia Lumia 800 smartphone, and the HTC Sensation XL top-of-the-range smartphone.

And there is an item which already has great scarcity value - an HP Touchpad. When HP announced it was discontinuing  its tablet just weeks after a glitzy launch, the price of exisiting stock was slashed from £400 to £89. There was then a manic rush to buy them up - and I was lucky enough to get one. It is actually a very likeable device - perfect for storing your pictures and videos or simply for surfing the web. Now you can bid for it - and as others are going for around £170 on eBay I'm hoping mine raises a decent amount for Children in Need.

Most of the items went live in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and many of the auctions close in the early hours of Saturday as the Children in Need broadcast ends. But a few are starting and finishing later, so keep a lookout. Now - get bidding!!!

How's the camera on the new iPhone?

(download)

There are really only two real selling points of the iPhone 4S - Siri and the new camera which is supposed to be of a much higher quality than the previous one. I've actually dictated much of this post using Siri. It seems to work pretty well - voice recognition is never simple. And over the weekend I've been trying out the new camera and I think the results are rather impressive. Judge for yourself. It will be interesting to see how the iPhone compares with the new Android ice cream sandwich Samsung phone being launched in Hong Kong this coming week - hope I can get a hands-on with that soon.
